Japanese Numbers

The Japanese numbering system is a combination of native Japanese numerals and Chinese-derived numerals. Learning Japanese numbers is important for everyday communication, like telling time, discussing amounts, or talking about dates. Whether you’re learning the language or dealing with numbers in a Japanese-speaking setting, this article is here to help you understand Japanese numbers better.

Japanese Characters

Kanji Symbols:

Kanji are logographic characters borrowed from Chinese. They represent concepts or ideas rather than sounds. For example, the kanji for “tree” looks like 木, and for “mountain” it looks like 山.

Hiragana:

Hiragana is a syllabary used primarily for grammatical elements, verb inflections, and some native Japanese words. Each character represents a syllable. Here are the hiragana characters for the five vowels (a, i, u, e, o) and the first row of the consonant-vowel combinations (ka, ki, ku, ke, ko):

あ い う え お か き く け こ

Katakana:

Katakana is also a syllabary, but it is mainly used for foreign words, technical and scientific terms, and the names of plants and animals. It has a more angular and simplified appearance compared to hiragana. The characters for the same sounds are represented like this:

ア イ ウ エ オ カ キ ク ケ コ

Romaji/English Pronunciation:

Romaji is the romanized representation of the Japanese script. It is the use of Latin script to write the Japanese language. The romaji equivalent for the above hiragana and katakana characters would be:

a i u e o ka ki ku ke ko

And for katakana:

A I U E O KA KI KU KE KO

Remember that pronunciation can vary slightly, and some sounds might not have perfect equivalents in English.
